This is the biggest, most involved page I drew for DC this year- huge at 23" x 32". The page shows the young teenage Robin Riko Sheriden heading out on her nightly patrol of her area of Gotham City. "They Reminisce Over You", reads the graffiti- a reminder of the recent death of her friend Troy, fresh in her mind.
Dominating the page is the iconic pig's head from Lord Of The Flies, the book that Riko is reading. The book becomes a symbolic mirror of the events of our story, a device lovingly cribbed from the Black Freighter segments of Watchmen.
My treatment of Gotham City is mostly informed by the minimalism of Dick Sprang's 1940's Batman comics, with other cues taken from the 90's Animated series and the 60's TV show. I wanted to draw the Gotham City I remembered from my childhood- how I remembered it, but not necessarily how it really was.
